In honor of the second leg of consecutive U.S. Opens at Pinehurst No. 2 this week, we return our Games to Play feature with the Pinehurst format.
Pinehurst (also know as a Chapman) is a unique format that brings together components of alternate shot and best ball. The game is played with two-person teams. Each player on the team tees off on a hole. Then, Player A hits Player B's tee shot and vice versa. With two shots hit on each ball, the team then decides the ball in better position and, from there, they play alternate shot until the ball is holed. The rules apply the same on par 3s as any other hole on the course.
The format is best suited for players who have similar styles of play, as well as similar handicaps.
