What's In A Name?

Last week Smylie Kaufman was all smiles after firing a blistering 10-under 61 (including an inward 29) to claim his maiden victory on the PGA TOUR.

Born Carter Smylie Kaufman, the rookie from Birmingham, AL got his name from his grandmother’s cousin, Smylie Gebhart.

Let’s be honest, nothing against Carter, but Smylie is way more marketable.  Just ask Mr. Eldrick Tont Woods (you might know him better as Tiger) about the power of a catchy name.

So in honor of Smylie’s “W” we’ve put together a list of some of the best names in professional sports, from golf to baseball and everything in between.

  • Luckie Kaufman (Smylie’s brother who also happens to be a really talented golfer)
  • Wiffy Cox (9-time PGA TOUR winner and pure striker of the golf ball)
  • Boo Weekly (Who else but a guy named Boo could ride the bull during the Ryder Cup)
  • Richie Incognito (Sadly no one will ever know his true identity)
  • God Shammgod (Former almighty Washington Wizard)
  • Walter “Sneeze” Achiu (Asian American football player and first minority to play in any major American professional sports league)
  • Jordin Tootoo (Right Wing, New Jersey Devils; his middle name Kudluk means ‘thunder’ in Inuktitut … so his name really stinks)
  • Larry Playfair (Former Buffalo Saber, safe to say he never cheated)
  • Usain Bolt (Olympic star, the guy is faster than lightning)
  • Sonny Sixkiller (Pretty fitting for a former quarterback)
  • Picabo Street (Great skier but even better at finding little kids)
