Launching drives, not rockets at Compass Pointe Golf Courses

Compass Pointe 1

I moved to Pasadena, Md., when I was in third grade. The drive to my parents' house requires going down Ft. Smallwood Road. For years, that meant passing by a huge, hilly, empty field. There were a lot of rumors about the nature of the property, why nothing was on it and what was going to be done with it. Speculating on that last piece, some said a golf course was one day coming.

Turns out that last rumor was right. About a decade after my family and I moved into the area, construction began on a golf course. Apparently it wasn't that nuclear waste dump some thought it was. However, the property adjacent to the 36-hole property was a former missile site in the 1960s and 70s. Of course, there are no missiles on site today and the golf courses are surrounded by houses, but it was always fun to wonder for so many years about the story behind what is now Compass Pointe Golf Courses.
