Camping in Cook County around Chicago has always been reserved for organized groups, but that is changing very soon.
Individuals and families will be able to camp overnight in a tent or a cabin while participating in diverse outdoor activities offered by the Forest Preserves staff. The campsites, professionally managed by Bill Casper Golf, will include five new or revitalized campsites: Shabonna Woods in South Holland, Camp Sullivan in Tinley Park, Camp Reinberg in Palatine, Bullfrog Lake in Willow Springs, and Camp Dan Beard in Northbrook.
The first new campground – Shabonna Woods — will open on Memorial Day Weekend. The remaining four sites are expected to open throughout June and July. All of the sites will offer tent pads, RV spaces, small and large cabins, and a long list of activities for people of all ages.
Unlike other camping sites, Forest Preserves of Cook County Camping will offer optional daily programming and regular special events for campers. Gear rental, Camping 101, Family Campouts and leadership courses are available. Free activities provided by Forest Preserve staff vary by site, but include activities such as archery, campfires and nature hikes.
